Patch 10.2.5, Seeds of Renewal, will include a Gilneas revamp and reclamation. While this questline isn't ready for testing yet, we can speculate on how this story may unfold.
The Story So Far
Gilneas is a human kingdom located southwest of Silverpine Forest. When the kingdoms of Lordaeron were overrun with the undead plague, King Greymane of Gilneas took desperate measures to protect his kingdom, barricading it off from the outside world with a Great Wall, and authorizing the use of a "secret weapon" - releasing worgen from the Emerald Dream to attack the Scourge. However, the worgen curse was not easily contained, and before long it began to spread throughout Gilneas.
Around the start of the Cataclysm, Gilneas went through several upheavals, all at the same time. First, the Cataclysm itself badly damaged the kingdom, with parts of the Gilneas peninsula falling away into the sea entirely. Second, Garrosh Hellscream, Warchief of the Horde, had commanded the Forsaken to take Gilneas. Under the ruthless leadership of Sylvanas Windrunner, the Forsaken assault was swift and deadly, and King Greymane's own son was killed by Sylvanas during the conflict. Finally, the worgen infection had spread more than ever - Even Greymane was revealed to be worgen.
In the end, Gilneas rejoined the Alliance. Driven out of their home, the people of Gilneas sought refuge in Darnassus. Though the Alliance managed to retake Gilneas itself, the kingdom has remained largely abandoned - partly due to the ongoing threat of hostile Forsaken neighbors in Silverpine, which only ramped up during the Fourth War.
Players have been asking about the return to Gilneas for ages, and we were promised that an event this important would happen in-game. Now, it's finally happening in 10.2.5, with the Gilneas Reclamation being announced as one of the highlights of the patch.
King Greymane is ready to retake his kingdom, but Gilneas isn't as empty as expected. Help reclaim what was lost and return the kingdom to Gilnean hands.
Speculation on Upcoming Story
According to the blurb, Gilneas "isn't as empty as expected". Now that there is an official peace between the Alliance and the Horde, it is unlikely that the unwanted presence in Gilneas is the Forsaken - so who could it be?
A Trading Post task,
, offers some clues, as this task includes this storyline's quest names. While these names could still change, we can already get an idea of the outline this storyline will take.
Warning: Mild spoilers for the Gilneas Reclamation storyline ahead.
First, the trading post task states "Speak to Genn Greymane in Stormwind or Calia Menethil in Silverpine Forest to begin this storyline". This suggests that the reclaiming Gilneas storyline will not be limited to the Alliance, as Calia Menethil seems likely to be offering it to the Horde. Naturally, this also suggests the questline is unlikely to be worgen-specific.
Second, the chapter names suggests the major enemy in this conflict is the Scarlet Crusade. The Crusade have been showing up again lately, most recently during the Forsaken Heritage armor questline, where it was revealed they have been making trouble in Silverpine Forest.
- 0/1 To Gilneas
- 0/1 A Crusade of Red
- 0/1 Aderic's Retort
- 0/1 Knee-High
- 0/1 Scarlet Blood
- 0/1 Smokepowder and Mirrors
- 0/1 Hounds of War
- 0/1 Crushing the Crusade
- 0/1 Artillerist Arsonist
- 0/1 Righteous Fire, Righteous Fury
- 0/1 Beginning a New Dawn
A fanatical religious sect with its roots in the Knights of the Silver Hand, the Scarlet Crusade are known for their extremism. They are violently opposed to the Forsaken, who they see as no different than the Scourge, but they also despise the Alliance, who they see as being led by a traitor.
In fact, towards the end of
Battle for Azeroth
, the Crusade began to distribute propaganda, railing against Anduin Wrynn and his supposed soft approach towards the Forsaken. One of the pamphlets makes a rather bold claim, but it also predicts some events we are witnessing today...
reveals that the Scarlet Crusade knows Calia has become undead, and they also know that Calia had a child. While they get the details wrong, (they claim a son when she had a daughter, and that she was assassinated by Anduin) they are right about some things: Calia was married, but was separated from her husband and daughter in a Scourge attack. She has since become undead herself, and remains hopeful that she might one day see them again - perhaps as Forsaken - but has heard no news of them.
However, the Scarlet Crusade claims to have her child - who they have named heir to the throne of Lordaeron. The note also claims that Calia's husband - a footman - was of the Arathi bloodline. It's unlikely the Crusade do have Calia's child - more likely a pretender - but the Arathi claim is interesting considering the fact that we will be seeing more of the Arathi in
The War Within
.
According to the propaganda, the Crusade had plans to reveal this claimed Menethil heir to the throne after they had "purged" Lordaeron of the Forsaken and worgen. Considering the efforts in Silverpine and Gilneas, it seems that they're still attempting to follow that plan. Unfortunately for the Crusade, the combined Alliance and Horde currently seem to be thwarting them at every turn.
That said, the Crusade are nothing if not resilient, and a self-claimed Menethil heir to Lordaeron's throne would certainly provide the sort of political conflict that's been absent from the World of Warcraft since the two major factions signed for peace.
Knowing that our dear Princess Calia was ASSASSINATED by Traitor Wrynn and raised as undead is a pang in our hearts, brothers and sisters.
But do not lose hope! King Terenas' dynasty will yet live on!
It was a well-guarded secret that during the late days of her father's reign, Princess Calia wed a nobleman of the ARATHI bloodline.
The prideful Arthas demanded that this truth remain hidden until he himself had wed and sired an heir. Of course, that never came to be.
But... a child WAS indeed born!
Princess Calia gave birth to a son. Yes, an HEIR to the Menethil throne!
Sadly, the princess was separated from her husband and child during a Scourge attack. Her family was presumed dead.
But let joy fill your hearts, friends... for the child was SAVED!
The young prince was rescued by a good-hearted citizen of Lordaeron. He has been kept sheltered and safe all these years by members of the Scarlet Brotherhood. We have him in a SECURE location that must, for obvious reasons, remain secret.
We had intended to reunite the young heir with his mother. Sadly, the Traitor King of the Alliance had Princess Calia murdered by his Banshee lover. The abomination that now walks this land is NOT Princess Calia!
Retribution will fall upon these monsters! Lordaeron is for the LIVING!
Let hope rise in your hearts, brothers and sisters. Once we have purged the undead FILTH and the CURSED worgen from our homeland, the young king will be revealed!
The Traitor Wrynn will be exposed and our TRUE king will take the throne. The Menethil dynasty WILL be restored!
