Worldsoul Saga Announcement Hints at Fulfillment of Anduin's Prophecy

When Anduin was just a child, the Prophet Velen foresaw that he would one day lead an army of Light against the forces of the Void. With the announcement of the Worldsoul Saga, it finally looks like this prophecy might come to pass!
The War Within
When introducing the Worldsoul Saga, Chris Metzen asked the question, "Will there eventually be an apocalyptic confrontation between the forces of the Light and the Void?" Then, when introducing the War Within Cinematic trailer, he reminded us that
Sometimes, very epic things can begin with small, heartfelt moments. What you're about to see is one of those moments.
The cinematic shows Thrall speaking to Anduin, who doesn't feel like leading anyone right now. By the end, Anduin promises that he's ready to face whatever's coming - and, as we know from the planned next three expansions, the Void is coming for the soul of our world.
A final confrontation between the Light and the Void is one that has been prophesied for a long time. Over a decade ago, when Anduin was just a child, the Draenei leader - prophet Velen - saw a vision of this confrontation. In it, Anduin led both the Alliance and the Horde against the forces of the darkness.
Instead of the prince, an armored warrior stood before him, his plate helm and breastplate shining with the essence of the Light itself. The warrior wielded a sword forged from the same material as the armor, held it aloft as he perched on an outcropping... Whether it was on another world or Azeroth, Velen couldn't quite tell. And suddenly the dark sky above erupted with the combined chivalry of Azeroth's races. The blood elves, orcs, trolls, tauren, and even the accursed undead and scheming goblins rode flying mounts of every sort and description. They were armored and armed in magical weaponry glowing with so much power it hurt Velen's eyes to look at them. Beside the legions of the Horde, the ancient night elves charged with humans, dwarves, and gnomes, whose ancestors formed the original Alliance, and the shape-changing worgen were united with them. Velen's own draenei bolstered the army, their ranks adorned in otherworldly metals and bearing crystalline maces and swords.
The Alliance and Horde were not alone.
Dragons swooped and soared in formations that made the sky resemble a giant multicolored, reptilian wing. They blanketed the horizon with their physical size and numbers, and when they roared a challenge, it shook not just the earth Velen stood on, but the universe as well.
And yet, for all this, the greatest shock to Velen's senses came as he saw those that flew just beyond the army of dragons. The naaru had taken the field, so many that Velen didn't understand how creation could contain them. The power of these beings of Light filled Velen's heart with hope, swept away the lonely centuries, and left him in wonder that he could ever despair, that the dark, no matter how terrible, could ever truly reign.
And then a shadow fell.
It was vast and empty and swallowed all light that entered it. Velen knew it would be all consuming until, at last, it would turn and devour itself, endlessly gnawing on nothing in the Great Dark Beyond, removing all meaning from the universe, from the most heart-breaking sonata to the most arresting sunset. It was too terrible to see, to comprehend, and yet the army headed straight for it. And the light began to fade...
Over the years, the chances of seeing this prophecy fulfilled anytime soon have seemed less and less likely. At the time, Alliance and Horde working together under one leader felt like an impossible scenario. The Dragon Aspects gave up their powers, and the Dragonflights scattered. The events of
Battle for Azeroth
lured us into a false sense of security, as we thought that by defeating N'Zoth we had saved Azeroth from Old God corruption forever.
As High King of the Alliance, Anduin has sometimes struggled to hold his own faction together, never mind act as a leader to the Horde as well. While the 2016
Legion
comic
Son of the Wolf
once again showed us Anduin preparing to face the armies of the Void, the vision showed a much older Anduin from the far future.
But now, the Anduin we're seeing in the most recent cinematic is a lot older, a lot more haggard, a lot more like the Anduin from the vision. In fact, the prophecy suddenly feels more imminent than ever.
Since the peace between the factions, relationships between the Alliance and Horde have grown strong. The Dragonflights have unified again, and have reaffirmed their duty as guardians of our world. Anduin, having been through hell and back quite literally, may not feel like a king now - but when he does reclaim his position again, he will be a strong leader. All hints of a naive child, too idealistic to effectively lead, are gone.
Our understanding of the prophecy has also changed. Once, it seemed like the Alliance would have to win the war and absorb the Horde to form this Army of the Light, but now, with Thrall of all characters being the one to approach Anduin, it's easy to believe in and Alliance and Horde working together.
By returning to an old prophecy, we really do feel like we are returning to the basics - the world we fell in love with - in this coming story. We can't wait to see how it plans out.
