World of Warcraft Post BlizzCon Q&A

Submit your questions during BlizzCon beginning Friday, November 3 after the opening ceremony in-person at the Darkmoon Faire and on the official forums for a special post-BlizzCon Q&A. You’ll be able to ask your World of Warcraft and Classic World of Warcraft questions and we’ll answer as many as we can in the special BlizzCon edition WoWcast the following week.

Guild Clash is an all-day, three-event tournament featuring four of the most formidable guilds from World of Warcraft. Prepare for an action-packed, adrenaline-fueled day filled with epic battles, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments. Guild Clash starts Saturday, November 4, 2023 starting when BlizzCon doors open at the Anaheim Convention Center.Guild Clash will be available live from BlizzCon on the Warcraft Twitch & YouTube Channels, with the players also live streaming their own perspectives from Streaming Stations in the WoW hall at BlizzCon. I really don't understand this hate or this manufactured rivalry. If you like retail, great. A lot of people don't. They like Classic. Whether you like it or not, the playerbase for WoW is split in two. Blizzard wants to make money off both, but they aren't making as much money as they would like from the Classic people. So what do you think Blizzard will do?

Will they neglect Classic and lose an entire playerbase as it slowly dwindles (cause these people aren't going to play retail)?

Spend a little bit of money to create content for Classic and keep all these people playing for years to come, paying for expansions - yes paying for expansions, like they do in retail, not getting them for free so far like in Classic - and making money out of their already created second playerbase?

Whatever they do for Classic isn't going to hurt retail. Retail isn't going away. There's no need to feel defensive over every Classic story. You're safe in retail. Blizzard isn't going to abandon you. It would be lovely if retail players could take just one thing from Classic players: focus on your own game.

Classic players don't constantly think about retail and don't even read retail news stories. We have as much interest in retail news as we do for Guild Wars or ESO or FFXIV. We see it as a completely different game that doesn't affect us. People are getting bashed for wanting a good game, and I guess the detractors can't handle retail being godawful right now whereas everyone is playing WOTLK, Era and HC.

EDIT: Would be great if Classic+ was an alternate timeline to Retail, somehow justify Sylvanas not jumping off ICC at the end of WOTLK which somehow radically changes the way forward.Comment by RamGuyI don't have high hopes for Classic+. There is no World of Warcraft Classic: Deep Dive for Day 2. This points to everything related to Classic will be over during the 1-hour World of Warcraft Classic: What's Next panel on Day 1.

If Classic+ were going to happen, I would think they'd have a Deep Drive for Day 2. It sounds like this will be all about wrapping up WotLK: Classic, moving into Cataclysm Classic and hopefully, details and release date for a new Vanilla Classic Seasonal Server.

I haven't touched Retail since Classic was released. I dipped my toes into Shadowlands and Dragonflight, but it didn't last long. I enjoy the more straightforward, slower and more social life on Classic. Yet I have no interest in Cataclysm at all. The game started removing itself from Vanilla, beginning with Wrath of the Lich King. But Cataclysm is the first expansion where the game started pushing in a different direction. The revamped Azeroth made questing much more linear, and almost all of it is soloable. Dungeon Finder was the beginning of making quality-of-life improvements at the cost of what made the game feel large and social, and it gets even worse with Cataclysm and the introduction of Raid Finder. We lose Class flavour and finesse by getting the new talent system. Class rotations and boss mechanics start to become more difficult and complex. Gameplay gets more involved, but this removes from the more laidback, relaxing and sociable experience.

I love the idea of Classic+. But at the same time, I'm having a tough time believing Blizzard could pull it off. And to be honest, I don't think the company has the will, motivation or passion to start on something like Classic+. I have the same feelings about the rumours of Sony putting Bluepoint in charge of making Bloodborne 2. Sure, Bluepoint did a great job with the Demons Souls remake, but that was taking a game design already made by From Software and re-doing it 1:1. Making an entirely new game from scratch in Bloodborne 2 gets me more sceptical.

The idea of Classic+ is excellent. Having the current development team doing it. I'm not so sure. And we have to remember, Classic has been easy money for Blizzard so far. Minimum effort that retains players for months. The time and effort required compared to what it means for subscriptions makes it a no-brainer. When you ask to develop entirely new things, the time and investment will significantly increase. And there are far fewer ways for Blizzard to monetize Classic when compared to Retail. So unless they do the stupidest thing possible by investing a huge amount of time and effort into Classic+. Only to toss in a lot of micro-transaction options to increase revenue, you are most likely just going to see most Classic players leave and not be interested. At the same time, you have already wasted time and effort creating the content that no one wants.

I think another Season Server is the best I can hope for. Season of Mastery was a failure on so many levels. The timing was poor, coming so soon after Vanilla had its last content phase, and it was going up against TBC: Classic for whatever reason. Who even came up with this abysmal timing on Blizzard's part? All communication regarding SoM was terrible. The announcement was vague, information regarding what would change and how the Seasonal Server would work was unclear, and the time from it being announced until it got released felt extremely rushed.

And they didn't change nearly enough to make the Season Server enjoyable. I'm hoping for a new Season Server with better planning, where Blizzard is making impactful and meaningful changes to spice things up. As this is a Season Server, they don't have to restrict themselves. Go all crazy with re-balancing of classic. Change up loot tables, etc. Destroy the meta so no one knows much of anything when they start playing the new season. Sure, the game itself will still be Vanilla, which is excellent, but by changing fundamental things, the season server could shake up to be a whole other experience than Vanilla. Imagine Shadow Priest being S-tier DPS, not knowing how and where to get all your BiS gear, etc. It could be so much fun. There is a lot of potential here, and it doesn't have to require massive investment and time from Blizzard.

I also think Blizzard needs to reconsider how they are planning to solve Classic moving forward. Currently, we have:

Classic Era (Vanilla)

-> Hardcore as a subset of realms for Classic Era

WotLK: Classic

The community is spread across Retail, Classic Era, Hardcore and WotLK: Classic. There isn't necessarily a huge overlap of players between Retail and Classic, but from my experience, there is quite a bit of overlap between Classic Era, Hardcore and WotLK: Classic.

How does Blizzard intend on this looking moving forward? Are we going to have:

Classic Era (Vanilla)
|
-> Hardcore as a subset of realms for Classic Era

Classic Era Seasonal

WotLK: Classic transitions into Cataclysm: Classic

It doesn't sound feasible to split the game into too many variations without hurting viable communities within each variation. TBC: Classic vanished, so I suppose this will be the case for WotLK: Classic as well. It will become Cataclysm: Classic, and there won't be any WotLK: Classic-only servers.

But at the same time, there are arguments to be made that most players, when asked, would answer that "Classic" is Vanilla through WotLK. Thus, the idea of having rolling servers will recycle Vanilla (1 year) -> TBC (1 year) -> WotLK (1 year) -> RESET -> Vanilla (1 year) -> TBC (1 year) -> WotLK (1 year) -> RESET might be viable and something players would enjoy.

That would be far easier for Blizzard to achieve compared to anything resembling Classic+.
